Fire Warden Training: What It Covers and Why It Is Important

Christopher White 15 January 2026

Fire wardens — also known as fire marshals — are designated members of staff who have specific responsibilities in the event of a fire. Their role includes assisting with evacuation, checking that their designated area is clear, reporting to the assembly point, and liaising with the fire and rescue service on arrival.

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must ensure that a sufficient number of competent persons are appointed to implement the fire safety measures identified in the fire risk assessment. This includes the appointment and training of fire wardens.

Fire warden training typically covers the principles of fire safety, how fires start and spread, the fire triangle and classes of fire, the role and responsibilities of a fire warden, evacuation procedures and assembly points, use of fire-fighting equipment, communication during an emergency, and practical considerations for the specific workplace.

JJM Fire Consultants Ltd provides fire warden training that is tailored to the specific building and operational context. Our training is delivered by experienced fire safety professionals and covers both the theoretical principles and the practical application of fire warden duties. We recommend that fire warden training is refreshed annually and whenever there are significant changes to the building, its use, or the fire risk assessment.
